Death
Mr. Richard Eugene Swaringen, 102, formerly of Hyde Park Dr., Concord, passed away Friday, January 31, 2014 in Wilmington, NC. A funeral service will be held 4 PM Tuesday at Mt.Olivet UMC officiated by Rev. Carl Settle and Rev. Wes Judy. The family will receive friends one hour prior from 3- 4 PM at the church. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. Richard was born on November 15, 1911 in Westminister, MD to the late Rev. Robert Alexander and Louise Furr Swaringen. He is also preceded in death by his wife, Edith Grove Scott Swaringen. Richard graduated from Duke University. He was a career educator at Odell High School, and as a principal at A.T. Allen, Hartsell, and Wolf Meadow schools. Richard was a Veteran of WWII where he was a Captain in the US Army. He also was a dedicated member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church He is survived by his daughters, Linda Swaringen Proseus and husband, Richard of Wilson, NC, Janet Swaringen Montgomery and husband, Frank of Wilmington, NC; grandchildren, Timothy Edward Proseus and wife, Ashley of Millsboro, DE, Richard Robert Proseus of Greenville, NC, Meredith Jill Montgomery of Wilmington, NC; great-grandson, Edward Alexander Proseus of Millsboro, DE. The Family would like to extend a Thank You to Autumn Care of Myrtle Grove. Memorials may be made to Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, 301 Mt. Olivet Road, Concord, NC 28025.
