GEORGETOWN, Texas -- A veteran teacher was killed in an accident on her way to work at Georgetown High School. According to a statement given by the Georgetown School District, Deirdre Furr, 54, was involved in the accident Wednesday morning. The school district says Furr had been teaching English, practical writing and SAT prep classes at the high school for 12 years. “It is difficult when our school community loses a member of its family,” Superintendent Joe Dan Lee said. “Ms. Furr was a role model to so many students, and her gift to teach will become a fitting tribute and memorial of her life.” The district says trained counselors will be at the school to offer support to any grieving students and faculty members. Parents who live nearby said they are concerned about the road conditions on the highway. "Not to mention people are texting, eating, doing their hair and makeup. Enough is enough," said Paul Secrest. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that 54-year-old Deirdre Furr, of Austin, was killed Wednesday in a crash on Texas State Route 29 approximately two miles east of Bertram. Ms. Furr was westbound in a 2004 Ford Taurus at 7:09 a.m. when a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer struck her from behind as she turned left. Stephanie Morrow, 22, suffered minor head and chest injuries as the driver of the Trailblazer. Ms. Furr was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene.
