Notes
Death
Mrs. Farrow M.E. Furr, the widow of a retired Montgomery police officer who was killed in an October 1974 shootout, died Monday after an extended illness. She was 83. Funeral services will be today at 2 p.m. at Leak-Memory Chapel. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Her husband was killed when three Black Muslims took hostages at a downtown Montgomery radio station. In what later was referred to as the Dexter Avenue shootout, the three took over radio station WPAX, held several employees hostage and broadcast pleas to local blacks to band together downtown and rally for revolution. Retired officer M.E. Furr was fatally shot in the back during one of the exchanges of gunfire that punctuated the hours-long siege. The Montgomery Advertiser, Montgomery, Alabama, February 9, 1988
