Death
ROCKWELL - Carrie Leona Hampton Brown, 89, of Rockwell, entered the Church Triumphant on Friday, Dec. 19, 2014. Carrie was born April 10, 1925 in Stanly County, a daughter of the late David Samuel and Ida Furr Hampton. A graduate of Landis High School, she was the manager of Brown's Nursery which she and her husband Ben opened in 1953. Carrie was a faithful member of Organ Lutheran Church, where she attended the Adult # 1 Sunday School Class. Carrie was a Girl Scout leader and helped establish Brownie, Junior, and Cadette Girl Scout Troops at Organ Lutheran Church. She also served on the Holly Hut Committee of Hornets Nest Girl Scout Council, a group responsible for Holly Hut being established at Dan Nicholas Park. Carrie was a Gold Star member of Faith American Legion Auxiliary Unit 327. She was also active in numerous regional and state nursery associations with her husband. Carrie was a friend to all, and she loved to garden, can, cook, collect cook books, read and do cross word puzzles. She coordinated the community Rowan Public Library Book Mobile stop at the nursery for many years. In addition to her parents, Carrie is preceded in death by her siblings, Authur Hampton, Pansy Overcash Hinson, Polly Gryder, Jessie Eller, Harold Hampton, Mary Solomon, George Hampton and Ralph Hampton. Carrie is survived by her husband of 67 years, Benjamin "Ben" Harold Brown, whom she married on Oct. 19, 1947; children, Ted Brown of Matthews, Kaye Brown Hirst and husband Ed of Salisbury and Amy Brown of Greenville, S.C.; grandchildren, Darien Brown of Mint Hill, Marisa Brown of Charlotte and William Hirst and wife Carla of Fort Mill, S.C; and two great-grandchildren. Service: The funeral will be held on Monday, Dec.22, 2014 at 11a.m. at Organ Lutheran Church, 1515 Organ Church Road, Salisbury NC 28146, conducted by Rev. Carlin Ours and assisted by Rev. Bruce Sheeks. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation: The family will receive friends at Powles Funeral Home on Sunday, Dec. 21,2014 from 4-7 p.m. Memorials:In lieu of flowers, gifts in Carrie's memory may be made to Organ Lutheran Church or to the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks, 820 Klumac Rd Salisbury NC 28144. The family would like to offer many thanks to Carrie's caregivers Magen Barber and Betty Frances File and to the staff at the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks where she lived since spring.
