Death
MOUNT PLEASANT - John DeBerry Harwood Jr., 88, of 28960 Pole Running Rd, Mount Pleasant, passed away Tuesday, Oct.19, 2010, at his home. He was born May 14, 1922, in Stanly County to the late John D. Harwood Sr., and Emma Florence Hatley Harwood. Brothers, Fred and Hugh Harwood, three sisters, Mary Morton, Elsie Hahn, and Bess Harkey also preceded him in death. He was a life long farmer and retired in maintenance from Central Cabarrus High School and Mount Pleasant Elementary. He collected antique clocks and took pleasure in repairing clocks for friends. A life long member of Oak Grove UMC, he served in many capacities including chairperson of the cemetery committee where he was active in restoring the old gravesites. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Audrey Louise Furr Harwood of the home; sons Charles D. Harwood and wife, Jane F. of Stanfield and John Malcolm Harwood of Mount Pleasant; daughter Frances Harwood Youngblood and husband, Lee, of Winston-Salem; grandchildren, Ashley Harwood, Ryan Youngblood, Emily Youngblood Dionne; great-grandchildren, Ashton Dionne and Jaden Moore. Visitation will be Friday, Oct. 22, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle. Funeral service will be Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant where he was a member with Rev. Ervin Houser to officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will meet at his home.
