Final rites for Daniel M. Furr, Jr., 17, of Wildfell cottage Albemarle park, will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock at the First Presbyterian church, the Rev. C. Grier Davis, pastor of the church, officiating. Pallbearers will be C. Fred Brown, James E. Divelbiss, Jr., Philip Cocke, Jr., Weldon Weir, Harry McDonnold and C. T. Johnson. A requiem mass will be said Friday morning at 7:30 o'clock at St. Mary's Episcopal church. Young Furr, a student in the tenth grade at Lee Edwards high school, business manager of Sky Hi, student newspaper at the high school, and member of the First Presbyterian church, died from a self-inflicted bullet from a 30-30 rifle, according to findings of Dr. George F. Baier, Jr., county coroner. The young student, son of Daniel M. Furr, city streets superintendent, and Mrs. Furr, died about 4:45 p. m. yesterday in the back yard of his home from a bullet wound in the head, police said. Officers quoted Mrs. Furr as saying that the boy came home from school and stated he had quit school and was going to join the navy. She said he left the house with a 30-30 calibre rifle, telling her he intended going in back of the house to shoot the gun. Mrs. Furr heard the rifle shot close to the house, officers said she told them. The maid went, into the yard to investigate and found young Furr lying at the corner of the house, police reported. Dr. Baler was called and, following an examination, pronounced the death a suicide. No inquest will be held, he said. It was understood by police that the boy had been despondent recently. In addition to his parents, young Furr is survived by his grandparents, Mrs. Anna Greene of Mooresboro, and Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Furr of Southport. Berryman funeral directors have charge of arrangements. The Asheville Times, Asheville, North Carolina, February 23, 1944
