CHARLOTTE (AP) — Randy Furr, 16, of Gastonia, was dead on arrival at Charlotte Memorial Hospital after the car he was driving was struck by a train in Lowell Saturday. Jack Ridley, chief of Lowell police, said Furr was going north on S. Main Street, attempted to follow another car across the railroad tracks, but came to a stop “for no apparent reason.” Witnesses said a Southern Railway train enroute to Charlotte from Gastonia struck the car and dragged it a quarter of a mile down the track.
