Death
GREENSBORO — Ileen H. Harwood, 87, died peacefully May 4, 2013 at Beacon Place in Greensboro, NC. Born August, 2, 1925 in Stanly County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Zeb Dee Hunneycutt and Ona Elizabeth Furr Honeycutt. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Floyd Harwood, who died in 1982, and her siblings Hubert Hunneycutt, Mildred Love, Hoyle Hunneycutt and Harold Hunneycutt. With her husband, a former grocery executive, she lovingly raised her two sons, Mike and Rocky, in Lexington, Mooresville, High Point, Danville and Greensboro before returning to Albemarle upon Ray's retirement. As her health began to decline, she moved to the Heritage Greens retirement community in Greensboro, where she resided for the past twelve years. She enjoyed being named an "Ambassador" for the community, greeting and entertaining new residents for a number of years. Her weekly Scrabble games were also a highlight of her years there. Illeen had a passion for sports and politics. She spent countless hours watching Atlanta Braves baseball games and checked the newspaper daily to follow the baseball standings. She thoroughly enjoyed watching Mike's Tarheel basketball games and Rocky's Gamecock football team. Although mostly confined to her home in recent years, she insisted that Rocky provide her with absentee ballots in all elections. She took great pride in her state and country, as evidenced by her perfect voting record. She loved spending time with her family and especially looked forward to visits from her three granddaughters and four great-grandchildren. She is survived by her sons and their spouses, Michael and Renie Harwood of Kiawah Island, SC and Rocky and Brenda Harwood of Greensboro, NC, her granddaughters, Kristan Hampton (Jamie) of Marietta, GA, Brooke Harwood of Greensboro, NC and Cortney Bishop (Baker) of Sullivan's Island, SC, and her great- grandchildren Lily and Emma Hampton and Ryder and Lucy Kohl Bishop. She is also survived by her brother, Bill Huneycutt (Nancy) of Oakboro, NC, her sister, Evelyn Smith of Concord, NC, Ray's cousin, Sheila Putnam of Albemarle, NC, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Her family is grateful for the care she received at Beacon Place as well as the prayers sent by the congregation of her beloved church and asks that donations be made to Beacon Place, Hospice and Palliative of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405 or to l\/lain Street United Methodist Church, Post Office Box 1255, Albemarle, NC 28002. Funeral arrangements are being made with Hartsell Funeral Home in AIbemarle. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle is serving the Harwood family.
