Death
Roberto L. Villegas of San Antonio, Tex., passed away on July 9, 2020 at Northeast Baptist Hospital in San Antonio from pneumonia associated with Coronavirus. He was 93 years old. Roberto was raised in the Rio Grande Valley and served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. After his service, he studied electronics and began a civil service career with the Air Force at Kelly AFB, retiring in 1986. Roberto was a great American patriot for whom love of flag and country was deeply engrained. He was proud of his military service in the cause of freedom. Taking his family to visit the national treasures in Washington, D.C. was one of his favorite travel experiences. A family man known as Robert, Tío Beto, and Papa, Roberto spent his life taking care of his family. He was a dad who spent time with his children, teaching them to read, write, and play games. He encouraged his children to pursue education and vocational opportunities, offered his best advice, and taught them they could believe in an rely on themselves. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the pride of his later years. He was an independent-minded man who enjoyed maintaining his houses and cars himself, whistling while he worked. He took pride and satisfaction from his work. He had a knack for improvisation, finding creative solutions to everyday problems. He had a dry wit and a fun-loving sense of humor that made people enjoy being around him. Supremely patient and tolerant, he adopted a live-and-let-live approach to others, and so lived a peaceful long life, and had no quarrels with anyone. Roberto and his wife were active members of a number of San Antonio church congregations over the years, where they participated in Christian ministry to the sick. His life was dedicated to giving and serving his family, friends, and people he didn’t know. He didn’t need material things to make him happy nor did life’s problems get him down, because he had joy in his heart and faith in God. Roberto was a dutiful son-in-law, devoted husband, and loving father. His cherished wife of 52 years, Emma Sauceda Villegas, preceded him in death in 2008. He is survived by his baby sister Sara Villegas Lopez of Plymouth, Ind.; eldest daughter Margie Villegas of San Antonio; daughter Tina Hope and her husband Kenny of San Antonio; son Rob and his husband Mike Normandin of Boston, Mass.; granddaughter April Furr Cerda, her husband Frank, and their sons Carter and Luke Cerda of San Antonio; and grandson Matthew Furr and his wife, Lauren of Austin, Tex. Due to current public health conditions, no funeral service will be held at this time. A memorial service is contemplated for October at Mission Park North Funeral Home to celebrate his life with us, but the date of the memorial has not been set. His earthly remains will be interred at Fort Sam Houston Memorial Cemetery on July 15, 2020. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made to the charitable organization of your choice.Endnotes
