Death
CONCORD -- Mr. Whitley, age 81, passed away peacefully at his home with his family by his side Saturday night, August 27, 2005. He was born on May 2, 1924 in Stanly County and resided in Concord, NC. He was a faithful employee at Alcoa, in Badin, NC for over thirty years. He was a loving son, husband, father, and grandfather. Mr. Whitley is preceded in death by his father and mother, Lafayette Fillmore Whitley and Corinna Elizabeth Whitley of Albemarle, brother's Ravon Whitley of Albemarle, and William Charles Whitley of Rockwell, sister Virginia Whitley Barbee of Oakboro, and grandson, Danny Furr of Charlotte. Survivors include his wife, Nadine Moss Whitley of Concord; one brother, Elbert Whitley of Albemarle; daughter Margaret Ann Furr and her husband Pete, of Charlotte; son George Donald Whitley and wife Tina, of Orlando, Florida; daughter Sharon Dianne Love, of Concord; daughter Robyn Whitley Cauble and husband Terry of Mt. Pleasant; daughter Crystal Georgette Whitley Smith and husband Michael, of Concord. Mr. Whitley has twelve grandchildren; Lori Furr Roberts, Dale Furr, Lisa Furr Ward, Cheri Whitley Kluge, Jana Whitley, Sina Whitley, Chrissy Whitley, Leslie Corinn Cauble, Tiffani Smith, Sean Smith, Goerge Benen Smith, and Braden William Smith. Mr. Whitley also has eight great-grandchildren. They are: Daniel Roberts, Holly Roberts, Marshall Furr, Kinslee Furr, Chase Ward, Brock Ward, Tyler Furr, and Merrick Kluge. Mr. Whitley also has numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Whitley served from 1943 until October 10, 1945 in the 34th Infantry Division of the United States Army during World War II. During his service, he participated in the Anzio Beach Invasion, in Italy. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart with Clusters. He was also a life-long member of the DAV in Albemarle. Mr. Whitley was a member of Boger United Church of Christ, serving as Deacon and Usher. He was also an avid member of the Stanly County Genealogical Society. He loved researching his family ancestry and sharing it with, not only members of his family, but others in the community. Mr. Whitley also loved Bluegrass and Country Music, coordinating music festivals in the Cabarrus and Stanly County areas. He played many instruments, including guitar, banjo, mandolin, and fiddle. He also enjoyed gardening, restoring antique furniture, traveling, and playing with his grandchildren. The family will receive friends and loved ones at Hartsell Funeral Home in Concord, North Carolina on Monday evening, August 29, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at Boger United Church of Christ, Concord, on Tuesday afternoon, August 30, at 3:00 PM. Burial in Boger United Church of Christ Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Boger United Church of Christ, 7313 Gold Hill Road, Concord, NC 28025.
