Notes
Death
LaVerne Aten, age 88, passed away peacefully from complications of dementia on Friday, July 28, 2023. She was born in Garza County to Velma McCarty Furr and Woodrow Furr on Oct. 21, 1934, and grew up on the family farm west of Close City along with her brother Novice (Rusty) Furr. LaVerne graduated from Post High School in 1952 and worked as a bookkeeper for several businesses, including Jackson Bros., Bryant Seeds, Producers Co-op, Grassland Co-op, and Close City Co-op. She retired as the gin manager at Close City Co-op. LaVerne married James Thomas Aten on Sept. 15, 1955, at Post. She and James lived in Grassland, sharing a lifetime of hard work and farming while raising their family. They treasured gathering with friends, riding motorcycles and were members of an antique car club. LaVerne enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and her vegetable and flower gardens. She was a great cook, and her freezers were always full of her garden’s harvest. Whatever job, chore, or hobby, LaVerne was a master and gladly shared her talents with others. LaVerne was known as “Butter” to her grandson Larry and his children, Samantha, Seth, and Ezekiel. She loved the kids chauffeuring her all over Grassland in the golf cart she kept just for that purpose. “Butter” was fun and loving but had “the look” that she gladly shared with all who disagreed with her. She quickly used her “pointer finger” in case someone missed the point of her conversation or had to be corrected. All will miss her wit and wisdom. LaVerne was predeceased by her parents, brother, and husband, James. She is survived by her children, Mike, and his wife, Julie; Terri Aten; one grandson, Larry Don Lee and his wife Virginia; and three great-grandchildren, Samantha, Seth and Ezekiel Lee. A visitation will be held on Monday, July 31, at Hudman Funeral Home from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 1, at Grassland Cemetery under the direction of Hudman Funeral Home with Pastors Genell Knisleyand John Bill Hedrick officiating. In lieu of flowers, you may send memorials to the Grassland Cemetery Association, 2821 CR 25, Tahoka, TX 79373.Endnotes
