Death

Darrell Lynn Furr, age three, son of Mr. and Mrs. Colin B. Furr of 716 North Second street, died Tuesday at 9 a.m. in Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill of injuries received when he was thrown from a rolling car near his home last Thursday afternoon. Funeral services for the child were held Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Seventh Day Adventist church of which he was a member of the Sunday school. Rev. W. H. Patsel conducted the services. Burial followed in Fairview Memorial park. Albemarle police, who investigated the accident, said the Furr boy was evidently playing in the 1950 Pontiac parked near his home. They said the car was owned by Vance L. Burleson of 713 South Fifth street and that it was parked on the left side of the street headed south. Police believe the child must have knocked the hydromatic gear shift lever out of the locked position which caused the car to roll backwards across the street. The child was thrown out on the pavement and received a head injury which proved fatal. Craven C. Tarleton, chief of police, said Thursday he did not know whether the death would be considered a traffic fatality. He is expecting a ruling on the matter from Raleigh.
