Death
MONROE — James Cameron Furr Sr., 75, of 1401 Virginia Avenue, Monroe, NC, died Thursday, April 23, 1998, in Carolinas Medical Center after a period of declining health. Born in Mecklenburg County, August 21, 1922, he was the son of Henry Braxton and Mollie Fink Furr. He retired in 1985 from Scovill/Yale Security Corporation. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church of Monroe for 48 years. A veteran of World War Il, Mr. Furr landed on the beaches of Normandy on July 4, 1944, with the 955th Field Artillery, V Corps, First United States Army. He served in the Campaigns of Normandy, Northern Frances, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe, receiving a commendation for actions in the Battle of the Bulge. He was predeceased by one sister, Mrs. Ethel Hartis, and three brothers, Everett G. Furr, Herman W. Furr and Max F. Furr. Survivors are his wife, Margaret Penegar Furr of Monroe; daughter, Diane Penegar Furr of Charleston, SC; and one son, James Cameron Furr Jr. of Charlotte. Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Central United Methodist Church, Monroe, NC, conducted by Reverend Michael Leatherwood. Interment will be in Lakeland Memorial Park, Monroe. Visitation will be on Friday evening from seven until eight p.m. at McEwen Funeral Home in Monroe, NC. Memorials may be to Central United Methodist Church, 801 S. Hayne Street, Monroe, NC 28112; or to the American Diabetes Association, 3109 Poplar Wood Court, Suite 125, Raleigh, NC 27604.
