Death
DENTON - Garry Martin Furr, Sr., age 81, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2015, at the W.G. Hefner VA Medical Center, Salisbury, after a period declining health. He was born June 4, 1933 in Cabarrus County, the son of the late Ralph Martin Furr and Addie Clark Furr. Garry was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during the Korean Conflict. He was a paratrooper and a decorated war veteran. Garry formerly worked at Duke Power Company in his earlier years. He also was self-employed for many years running Furr's Welding & Siding Company. He was an avid outdoorsman loving to go deer hunting and deep-sea fishing. In later years he enjoyed farming as a special hobby. He also owned a large farm in Mt. Gilead at one time which later became a major golf course called Uwharrie Pointe Golf Course. He later sold that property and lived at the coast for a while and finally buying his farm in Denton. He loved all sports especially supporting his grandsons playing in their various sporting activities. Survivors include his wife, Clarice Williams Furr; his children, Garry M. Furr, Jr. and Kymberly Furr Hubbard (Tim), both of Kannapolis, and Gerald Furr (Mary) of Wilmington; grandchildren, Matt, Landon and Chandler Hubbard. He was affectionately known as "PawPaw" by the Fab 8 team of Unit 2B Building 42 at the VA Medical Center who were a part of his great care. Arrangements: A graveside service to celebrate his life will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22 at the National Cemetery, Salisbury, officiated by the Chaplain at the VA Medical Center. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21 at Whitley's Funeral Home, Kannapolis.
