Chambers had become involved in an argument with W. E. Joyner, which ended when Chambers pulled a gun and shot at Joyner. However, the bullet missed Joyner and hit Furr, who died soon after in the Concord hospital. A hearing for Chambers scheduled for this afternoon was postponed at Chambers’ request and probably will be held Thursday. Funeral services for Furr were held at Fair View, 3 p. m. today. FURR’S SLAYER GETS 18 YEARS
Joe Chambers of Kannapolis Pleads Guilty to ‘Mistake’ Slaying July 7. CONCORD, Aug. 21. — Joe Chambers, young Kannapolis man, pleaded guilty to second degree murder in Cabarrus superior court this afternoon for the July slaying of Dan Furr, and was sentenced by Judge J. H. Clement to serve from 18 to 20 years in State's prison. Solicitor Charles Coggin had stated the State would seek a first degree verdict, when counsel for Chambers entered his plea of guilty. This was accepted. Furr, 31, also a resident of Kannapolis, was fatally wounded July 7 in a filling station near here when Chambers allegedly fired at W. E. Joyner, with whom he had engaged in an argument. Taking the stand today, Chambers said he fired only to scare Joyner and did not intend to kill either him or Furr.
