Death
SOUTHPORT - Mr. Roy Swain, age 88, of 1326 N. Howe Street, died Sunday, October 28th, 2001 at Dosher Memorial Hospital. Mr. Swain, a native of Brunswick County was born on December 4th, 1912 to the late James D. Swain and Mamie Eva Spencer. Born in Bolivia, he later moved to Southport where he spent his life. During that time, he owned and operated two Service Stations and was a Building Contractor. He was married to Estelle Furr for 63 years. He was a Mason for over 50 years and was a member of Pythagoras Lodge # 249. Mr. Swain was a long time member of Southport Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife Estelle Furr Swain of the home. Two sons; James A. "Jimmy" Swain and wife Joann of Winston-Salem, NC and William Jerry Swain and wife Melissa of Pocatello, Idaho. One brother; Bennie D. Swain and wife Miriam of Pensacola, Florida. Three grandchildren; Terri S. Zigler and husband Ricky of Winston-Salem, NC, Ashley Downey and husband Michael of Denver, Colorado and Michael Swain of Jacksonville, Florida. Two great-grandchildren; Lena Keene of Hampstead. NC and Trey Mock of Winston-Salem, NC. One great-great-grandchild; Haley Granger of Hampstead, NC. Many nephews and nieces including three local residents; G.W. Fisher and wife Lena, Paul Fisher and wife Karen and Dale Swam and wife Judy. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday at Peacock-Newnam Funeral Home on Howe Street. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Southport Baptist Church with Reverend Wayne Adkisson officiating and burial will follow at Northwood Cemetery. Serving as Casket Bearers will be Jerry Spencer, Jimmy Ross, Wayne Ludlum, Roger Ward, Woody McRoy and Son Carrier. Also in attendance will be the Southport Baptist Senior Class who will be serving as honorary Casket Bearers. The family has advised that flowers will be accepted, however, if you wish to send a memorial contribution please send it to the Southport Baptist Church Building Fund in Roy's honor.
