Death
CONCORD - Thomas Lamar Canaday Sr., 77, of 308 Highland Ave., died Friday, June 1, 2007, at Hospice House of Cabarrus County. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hartsell Funeral Home, Concord. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Highland Baptist Church, Concord, with the Rev. Leonard Aycock and the Rev. Johnnie Morton officiating. The body will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will be at Carolina Memorial Park. Mr. Canaday was born March 21, 1930, in Dorchester County, S.C., the son of the late James Wesley Canaday and the late Nellie (Harbeson) Canaday. Mr. Canaday worked for Southern Woodworks of Charlotte and Matthews Building Supplies in Matthews, where he retired from in 1994. He then went to work for IBM in Concord until 1997. He was an active member of Highland Baptist Church, where he loved to play his four string tenor banjo. He was known for his love of working with wood. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rachel Virginia (Deputy) Canaday, who he married Dec. 23, 1948, and died in 1985; his beloved wife, Raymell Furr Mason Canaday, who he married Aug. 24, 1987, and died in 2003; six brothers; and two sisters. Survivors include his sons, Thomas (Tommy) Canaday Jr. of Pageland, S.C., Robert (Bobby) Canaday of Concord and John Canaday and wife, Debbie, of La Junta, Colo.; daughter, Kathy and husband, Ronald Russell Sr., of Concord; step-children, Randy and Renae Wilson and Ann and Robert Morton and their families; sisters, Ruth Gruber of Round-O, S.C. and Louise Hutto of Reevesville, S.C.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
