Death
GREENSBORO — Ivey Lloyd Furr, 84, died April 1, 2010 at his home surrounded by family. A Liturgy of Christian Burial followed by Committal will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 3, 2010 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 2715 Horse Pen Creek Rd., Greensboro, NC 27410 followed by his burial at Westminster Gardens. Ivey, "Grandaddy," was born November 24, 1925 in Asheboro, NC to James R. and Aggie Furr. He worked in the Civil Conservation Corps, "3 C's," and then joined the U. S. Navy at 17 years old, where he served his country proudly in three campaigns in WWII: Omaha Beach, Normandy, Southern France, and Okinawa. He joined the U. S. Army and served his remaining tour-of-duty for 22 years with the 82nd Airborne Division, and the last three years with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers in the Mediterranean until his retirement in 1966. His civilian service was as a Superintendent in the High Lift, Paint, and Sheet Metal Departments with Gilbarco, Inc., where he was employed for 17 years. He enjoyed retirement with his wife Katie, who he was married for 65 years, his children, and his grandchildren, who he greatly loved. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and his beloved oldest son, David. He is survived by his wife, Katie Jackson Furr, his daughter, Janet Gross and husband, Dewey, and granddaughter, Corey Hand of Birmingham, AL, his youngest son, Barry Furr and wife, Peggy and grandchildren, Lindsay Brelsford and Matthew Furr, of Greensboro. Visitation will be at Hanes Lineberry N. Elm Chapel on Friday, April 2, 2010 from 7 until 9 p.m. A Memorial Mass will be held at a later time.News & Record, Greensboro, North Carolina, April 2, 2010
