Ulysses Shakespeare BURLEYSON
(8 Aug 1870 - 27 Oct 1959)
He was a farmer, teacher, and merchant.
The following are two excerpts from the journal of U.S. Burleyson, in the possession of Edith Whitley:
Today August 8, 1942, is my seventy second birthday or rather today I am 72 years' old. My health is apparently good. Today I have picked and sold grapes from my son's (Macon) vineyard. Grapes are $1.25 per bu. Macon is now in the army at Camp Chaffee, Ark. in a tank division. Nellie my oldest daughter lives near the slack house. Her husband is running a woodshop. His name is C.L. Smith. Roxie the next child is living on Spring St. in Albemarle. She works in the Lillian Mill. Dellie the third child lives on the farm near Eudy -- Her husband Glenn Efird farms. Theodore lives on (in) Concord 3 miles west of Mt. Pleasant and works in a hosiery mill at Concord.
Macon did work in hosiery mill at Charlotte but as I have before stated is now in the army. We are now in a great war. It will take the lives of many of our sons and then it might be possible that we will not win. But I feel we shall win as right wins in the end.
Judie lives in Statesville. Her husband Arch Cree is an insurance agent. Raymond runs a filling station and grocery store near Kannapolis N.C.
U.S. Jr. who is named after me was 20 years' old yesterday. He is in the Navy at Norfold Va. He volunteered June 7, 1942. He came home on short leave today.
My wife's health is better than it has been for the last two years or more, but at the present is some worse just for the last few days. She does the housework now. I am very thankful to God for living this long.
When I was young I never expected to live this long. I have many good friends. My wife and children are sympathetic and kind to me. I expect to live in that country where we will always stay young. I close now.

U.S. BURLEYSON

Albemarle, North Carolina
Today (Aug. 8, 1958) I am eighty eight. Feel fairly well, but can tell that I am slipping- gradually getting feebler. My appetite is not good. Probably I do not exercise enough. Sleep well and still enjoy reading.
My good wife died January 21, 1958. We had been married 62 years. Think of her almost every hour when awake. At best my road is lonely and sad. Roxie lives with me and works at a store. She treats me very kindly and prepares good meals for me.
All of the other children are kind and helpful to me. I am proud of my four sons and four daughters.
Roxie and I attend Canton Church. She drives her car. Rev. O. H. Bolch is the pastor and has been since 1947. Has served longer than any of the other pastors of this church. There are now 450 members of this church.
This may be my last living birthday. Expecting to spend eternity in heaven with loved ones and see Jesus who set me free. Won't it be glorious?
