I assume that he is the second child from these facts:1. He is the only child listed on the 1900 census.
2. The census says that his mother has had two children and both are alive.
3. He is 10 years of age.
4. The couple has been married for 17 years.
Therefore, I think that it is reasonable to think that their first child is probably 16 years old or so and has moved out of the household. maybe at school, since the father is a physician.
