Biography

Gustav Adolph Carlson was born in Sweden and immigrated to Pennsylvania, where he married another Swedish immigrant, Amanda Lind. They eventually settled in Emporium, Cameron County, Pennsylvania where they lived for the remainder of their lives. They had twelve or maybe thirteen children, with eight surviving beyond infancy. Gust died in 1933.

These generalities are easily verified. The specifics are more difficult, though. Sweden was undergoing economic difficulties and records, particularly for rural families, are difficult to find. At the time of immigration, Pennsylvania did not yet have a mandate for the collection of vital records. Also, there is the issue of names. Swedes at the time selected given names from a remarkably small pool. Because patronymic naming was on the decline, one can never be sure if a child carried the father’s given name, surname, or even a made-up name. Finally, because Gus immigrated as an adult, his English may have been rudimentary and heavily accented, hence difficult for record-keepers to understand. Accordingly, we find variation of his name in available records: Gustave Adolf, Gustaf Adolf, Augustus, Gust, Gus, and Gustus.

Birth

Various records differ slightly on the date and place of Gus’s birth. Here we rely on the date given in his death certificate and obituary, 2 February 1861 [1] [2] A reasonable alternative is the date 2 February 1860 given in a letter by a professional genealogist in Sweden. [3] That date is discounted, though, because the letter provided deliberately incomplete information in the hope of gaining commissioned work. Other dates as early as 1860 and as late as Mar 1861 also appear in some records.

All sources agree that he was born somewhere in Kalmär, Småland, Sweden. Some sources state more precisely Mönsterås or Forssa. To decode this: Småland is a province; Kalmär is a county; Mönsterås is a municipality; and Forssa is a parish.

As for his parents, the Carlson family is in possession of a death announcement in Kalmär for a Carl Nilsson, issued by his wife Kristina (or Christina). [4] The family’s possession would seem to be legitimate evidence that Gus Carlson was the son of Carl Nilsson, and his wife Christina. Furthermore, the family’s Bible lists Carl and Christina as grandparents, although this might not have been a contemporary note. [5] Gus’s death certificate [6] states that his father is Carl Carlson, but we take the surname as a presumption by the clerk who recorded the information. Additional evidence is provided by a letter from another descendant of Carl, [7] although the information in this letter has almost no overlap with other information, raising the possibility that it might have been a grand case of mistaken identity.

Immigration

In the 1900 census, [8] Gust said he immigrated in 1880; in the 1920 census, [9] he said 1878. Perhaps he was relying on memory or was rounding off. Because his name is common, it is difficult to determine emigration records with precision. However, the most likely records found so far are Swedish police reports that a Gustave Adolf Carlson traveled from his home in the village of Forssa to Göteborg, Västra Götaland, Sweden, ca 7 March 1881. From there he took a ship to Hull, England on 23 March. (Hull was a common processing center for migrants to America.) It is currently not known how his voyage was completed, nor how he immigrated to the US. The emigration report stated his destination as “Stoneboro”. The only “Stoneboro” that we have been able to find is a town in Mercer County, in far western Pennsylvania. Although, Gus never arrived there, the various events during the remainder of this life could be considered as falling upon the route from New York City to Stoneboro. [10] [11]

Marriage and first children

At some point, Gus met the women that he would marry. Amanda Lind. His obituary states that he married her on 7 July 1884 in Antrim, Tioga, PA. [12] Tioga is a county in the central part of the state bordering on New York. There is room for some doubt about the specifics, though. We can’t find any formal record of the marriage. Gus’s youngest daughter said that her mother had torn the marriage record out of the family Bible. [13]

Their first child, Gustav Adolf Hillner Carlson, was born 1885 in Tioga County. Their second child, Arthur Ferdinand, was born a year later in Sullivan County, which is southeast of Tioga. [14]

Removal to Cameron County

About 1889, Gus and Amanda removed to Cameron County, PA, where they lived for the remainder of their lives. This date is inferred by his 1889 petition in Sullivan County (described below), his obituary implying a date of 1891, and the dates of birth of his children. Judging from the recorded births of children, they would have lived in Sterling Run, a small community named by a confluence of a stream with the same name. Possibly, they farmed there.

Naturalization

Gus was declared a naturalized citizen on 2 October 1893, by the prothonotary of the Court of Common Pleas in Emporium. [15] In his petition for naturalization, he stated that he had taken an oath of allegiance before the prothonotary of Sullivan County on 13 April 1889. Despite contrary information provided in subsequent census reports, the wife, Amanda, was declared naturalized by reason of marriage only in 1933. [16]

Life in Emporium

Emporium, the county seat of Cameron, is a small town in the least populous county of Pennsylvania. The winters are cold and the ground is hilly, rendering difficult large-scale farming. However, it became a watering stop on the Pennsylvania Railroad, hence a transportation nexus. Children’s birth records suggest that Gus and Amanda moved there in 1898.

Gus Carlson took a job as watchman at a large tannery, which continued its operation for the remainder of his life. Their first census record as a family, the 1900 census, shows them living northwest of the village at 419 W. Allegany Avenue. [17] This house was occupied continuously by Carlson family descendants as late as 1986 and probably beyond. (The census records show that the house was rented; it’s unclear when the Carlson’s gained ownership.)

Children

In addition to the two previous children, Gus and Amanda had seven, maybe eight, children in Sterling Run. Only three survived beyond infancy. In Emporium, they had three children, all surviving infancy.

The first two children born in Sterling Run were both named Hulda (or Huldah) Victoria, born on 23 Nov 1888 and 31 Oct 1890, respectively. Both died within a year, 8 May 1889 and 21 Nov 1890, respectively, and are buried in Sterling Run Cemetery (also called the Whiting Cemetery). [18] There is also an undertaker’s record that Gus purchased a casket for an unnamed child on 21 Nov 1889. [19] If the date is correct, that would suggest yet another short-lived child.

The repeated use of the name Hulda Victoria suggests that Amanda’s mother might have had that name.

The next three children, Victor, Carl Oscar, and Elmer Cecil Brice were born in 1890, 1892, and 1894. All survived to adulthood. [20] [21] [22] [23]

Two more children, Martin Valdemare (incorrectly transcribed as “Mark” in some records) and Inez Elizabeth Blanch were born in 1896 and 1897, only to die young. [24] [25]

After the family moved to Emporium, three more children, Dewey Ernest, Myrtle Iva Linnea, and Victoria Evelyn R. “Kena”, were born in 1898, 1900, and 1901. [26] [27] [28] All lived to adulthood. In fact, Iva lived to age 105, her life touching three different centuries. [29]

Family Life

The lives of Gus and Amanda overlap those of persons still living. One such descendant describes Gus as a kind and gentle old man, while describing Amanda as a “dragon” who tried (and sometimes succeeded) in breaking up her children’s marriages. She claimed that her great-great-grandmother was a Swedish duchess. [30] We can certainly infer some degree of vanity to her; successive censuses imply birthdates that are successively later in time.

The family attended the Methodist Episcopal Church in Emporium. [31] (Probably, no Lutheran Church was available.)

Apparently, Gus worked as a watchman at the tannery until near his death. [32] [33] [34] He died in the hospital in nearby Elk County on 28 Oct 1933 of uremia and stomach cancer, complicated by an arteriosclerotic kidney. [35] His obituary noted two surviving siblings, Carl and Christine Johnson, both living in Chicago. Also, his wife, five sons, and two daughters lived beyond him. He was buried in the Sterling Run Cemetery on 31 October. [36]

Gus’s obituary called him “one of Emporium's respected and loved citizens.”
