Casparus Roelof WESTERVELT

(1688 - 1769)

Written for WikiTree:

Kasparus, the son of Roelof Westervelt and Orselena Stymets, was baptized 19 July 1694. The event was witnessed by Gerrit Stimetz and Arrientie Gerrits Van Huysen. [1] The Westervelt family genealogy [2] agrees with the date.

In accordance with Dutch baptism customs, we can infer that he was born within a few weeks prior to the baptism. However, Ancestry.com's Millennium File, a derivative compilation that does not identify its sources, gives this man a birth date of 1688. [3]

Many records use variants of his names, including "Kasparis" and "Casparus"; and "Westerveldt," "van Westervelt", and "van Westerveldt."

Casparus and Aeltie Bongaert were married at her parents' home in Hackensack on 7 May 1715. [4] [5] Westervelt [6] writes, "... the ceremony having undoubtedly taken place at the residence of her father, situated on what is now known as the Teaneck road, about 1-1/2 miles to the east of Hackensack, this property being part of the estate of the late William Walter Phelps."

The couple had eleven children, all born in New Jersey:

Orseltije Westervelt, bef 6 Nov 1715
Roelof Westervelt, 1718
Maritije Westervelt, bef 11 Sep 1720
Jan Westervelt, 2 May 1722
Anaetije Westervelt, 1724
Cornelius Westervelt, 4 Mar 1726 [N.S. date]
Benjamin Casparus Westervelt, 1727
Maria Westerveltm bef 17 Jan 1730 [N.S. date]
Elizabeth Westervelt, bef 9 May 1731
Jacobus Westervelt, 1733
Elisabeth Westervelt, bef 6 Jul 1735

From their marriage until about 1744, Casparus lived on land for which Casparus's father had received patents from the original proprietors. [6] About 1744, he removed to Dutchess County, New York, where he purchased 1600 acres of land south of Poughkeepsie and extending from the Hudson River to Wappingers Creek. Westervelt [7] provides the history of the land's ownership.

In 1755 record, in a compiled census substitute, shows him living in Schraalenburgh, Bergen County, New Jersey, [8] but this record may be an artifact of continuing church membership there. However, Westervelt [6] states that Casparus was never a member of the Hackensack or Schraalenburgh churches.

At some time between 1735 (the birth date of her eleventh child) and 1767 (the date of remarriage, Aeltie died and Casparus married Magdeline Luis, the widow of John Thomkins, in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County. [9] [10]

Casparus died during 1769. Find-A-Grave [11] states that he died in Hackensack, but was buried in the Westervelt Family Ground in Poughkeepsie. Westervelt [10] says that the family plot was near the Manchester Bridge over Wappingers Creek. (Editor's note: I lived there for nine years, but am unfamiliar with the name "Manchester Bridge"--JWM.)

Research Notes

In 1929 and 1938, respectively, Edmund Joseph Bennett and his brother Kingsley Lorillard Bennett, both natives of Sodus, New York, claimed membership in the Sons of the American Revolution based on the service of Derick Van Westervelt, identified as a grandson of Kasparas Westervelt. [12] [13]
