Individual Details

William MULLINS

(Abt 1572 - 21 Feb 1620/21)

From Anderson, Great Migration Begins:

"It has been suggested that he [William] was the William Mullins of Stoke, Surrey, about ten miles from Dorking [English Homes 73-74; Brainard Anc 217]. This likely identification is aided by a 1616 Privy Council order that may have been a religious trial motivated William to sell his holding in the Manor of Dorking and emigrate [English Homes 73-74; Brainard Anc 217-218]."

Despite this possibility, there's no documentary evidence of his date of birth. Anderson estimates before 1698, based on the ages of his children, but Mayflower Descendants, vol 16, part 1, estimates before 1572, based on the marriage date of his parents.

He, with his wife Alice and four children, arrived with the first colonists aboard the Mayflower. The first winter was harsh on the family. Mullins made a deathbed will on 21 February 1620/1 and died on the same day. His wife and his children survived him, but Alice and son Joseph died later during the winter. The inventory of his will suggests that Mullins was a shoemaker.
