Individual Details
Alma Louise SPINKS
(27 Jun 1908 - 15 Jun 1973)
Alma Louise Spinks was born 27 June 1908[1] in Virginia to George W. Spinks and his second wife, Ida Bryant. The place of birth was likely Fauquier or Prince William counties in northern Virginia.
The 1910 census shows her family living in Brentsville, Prince William, Virginia.[2]. By the time of the 1920 census, her father had died and she lived in her mother's household at 334 S. Patrick St in Alexandria, Virginia.[3] Alma completed three years of grade school.[4]
John William Moore also lived in Alexandria, about nine blocks away. He and Alma married on 30 Apr 1923 in Washington, D.C.[5][6][7]
Some uncertainty in the date of her birth is introduced by her marriage records, which suggest she might have been born by 1905. However, oral family tradition[8] is clear that she was a very young bride and lied about her age in order to get married. The location of the marriage in Washington, D.C. is not surprising; many northern Virginia couples married there because there was no statutory waiting period. Because her first child was born less than eight months after the marriage, some haste may have been desired.
In 1930, the family lived at 112 S Pitt St,[9], in 1934 at 304 Prince St,[10] and in 1935 and 1940, at 1106 Wilkes St.[11]
During their married life, John and Alma had 9 children, with 6 surviving infancy. The oldest child, Catherine Jeannette "Junie" Moore, preceded the second child by four years, and was age 15 at the birth of the final child. As might be expected in a sizable family, Junie assisted in the mothering duties. A sign of her role in the family is that the younger children generally did not refer to her by name; they called her "sister".
Long before 1973, the family moved to the Delray section of Alexandria, at 1216 E. Luray Ave.[12], a home that was eventually owned by one of their grandsons. Her husband died in January 1973; on 15 June, she died at Circle Terrace Hospital in Alexandria, due to multiple causes.[13][14] She was buried at Mt. Comfort Cemetery in Alexandria, Fairfax, Virginia.[15][16]
