Individual Details

Charles W. SPINKS

(Abt 1816 - 14 Jun 1915)

Maybe Charles Spinks didn't much like census-takers inquiring into his personal life, because he gave them a lot of different answers, including inconsistent ages. We know that all refer to the same person, though, by matching up the children's names. He would have had more to lose by falsifying his pension application, so the birth date and location given here were chosen from the information provided there.

Charles W. Spinks was probably born about 1816 in Fairfax county, Virginia. Other possible dates include 1817, 1819, and 1820; another possible location--Middleburg, Loudoun county, Virginia--is provided by the death certificate of his son, George.

He was illiterate and worked as a "farm laborer". He did not accumulate much in the way of wealth. At the age of 44, his personal wealth was estimated at $20 (about $560 in 2015 dollars).

He first married on 24 August 1848 to Eliza Downs. (I can't find any other record of her--before or after.)

He second married Sarah Farr on December 8 or 9, in Loudoun county, Virginia. "Virginia Marriages-1785-1940" has four different entries for the marriage. Presumably, 8 December was the date of the license, and 9 December, the date of the marriage. In some of the marriage records, and in most of the subsequent records, Sarah is called "Martha". Sarah and Martha must be the same person, because the 1860 census, taken shortly after the birth of son George, lists her name as "Sarah" while his death certificate lists her name as Martha, albeit with a misspelled maiden name.

The marriage produced four children, Joseph H., Charles Wiliam, George W. and Martha Thomas.

The family lived near the border of Fauquier and Loudoun counties, sometimes in one and sometimes in the other. The 1860 census lists them in northeast Fauquier, the 1870 census in Unison, Loudoun, and the 1880 in Scott District, Fauquier. In 1910, the census lists Charles as widowed and living with the family of his son, Joseph, in the Scott District of Fauquier county.

Apparently, at the age of 45, Charles Spinks enlisted in the Confederate Army. His pension application states that he served under Capt. Edward Hunter Carter in Company K of the 8th Virginia Infantry. If his service continued through the battle of Gettysburg, then Charles Spinks was a very lucky man. Although the regiment had a nominal strength of 750 men, it mustered only 243 on the eve of the battle. On July 3, the regiment was attached to the right flank of Garnet's brigade in Pickett's famous charge. Upon reaching the entrenched Union position, bearers' of the 8th's flag were successively shot down and the flag was lost at the spot called "the high water mark of the Confederacy". Of the 243 men, 34 were killed, 33 were wounded, 101 were captured--a total of 168 casualties, earning the unit the nickname, "The Bloody Eighth."
