George Buckingham, a laborer, aged 19 years and 5 months, born in Chipping Norton, enlisted on 29 January 1895 (his second attempt), in the 4th Battalion of the Oxfordshire Light Infantry. [Pensioners, p. 1]. The unit is also known as the Oxon and Bucks Light Infantry [Attestation, p. 1]. (See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxfordshire_and_Buckinghamshire_Light_Infantry ).He was described, on 30 January, as 6 feet, 1-1/4 inches tall with a "fresh" complexion, gray eyes and brown hair. The existence of tattoo marks on the back of his left forearm were noted. He was found to be suitable and enrolled on that day. His religion is shown as Church of England. [Pensioners, p. 2]
His service record notes that he spent a day (3-4 April 1897) in civil custody, was convicted of "illegal possession" and forfeited pay. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on or about 7 October 1901 [Pensioners, p. 3]
He served in India from 1 February 1898 to 19 Mar 1901, participating in the Tirah expedition (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tirah_Campaign) to re-secure the Khyber Pass. He was awarded the India Medal with a clasp for the Punjab Frontier, 1894-1898. [Pensioners, p. 4] During his service in India, he suffered from malaria and contracted syphilis. [Personnel, pp. 12, 16, 31-32, 25-26]
He also served in South Africa from 3 August 1901 to 4 October 1902 and was awarded the Queen's South African medal with clasps for 1901, 1902, Cape Colony, and Orange Free State. [Pensioners, p. 4] During his service in South Africa, he suffered a gunshot wound to the left hip. [Personnel, pp. 97, 23-24, 5].
At some point (probably upon discharge) his next of kin were listed as father, James (West Street, Chipping Norton), one brother and 3 sisters. [Pensioners, p. 4]
He was discharged on 28 January 1907 following precisely 12 years of service. Upon his discharge, he was paid a "special war gratuity" for South Africa service. [Pensioners, p. 3]
