William COTTLE
(1626 - 30 Apr 1668)
Transcription done by OCR with some hand editing and renumbering of notes:
23 WILLIAM1 COTTLE [or COTTELL[note 1]], of Newbury, b. ab. 1626, m. SARAH [RING, dau. of RICHARD RING, and granddau. of JOHN ROLFE ?].[note 2] He came with John Rolfe in the " Confidence," 1688, aged 12, as servant of John Sanders, who m. Rolfe's dau. Hester. In the same ship were Robert Ring and several other S. and Nb. settlers. [See p. 111.] He d. April 30, 1668[Nb]; inv. est., Sep. 29, 1668. Wid. Sarah m, ab. 1673, John2 Hale (Thomas1) of Nb., his 3d wife.[note 3] She d. ab. 1698. Children:
24 i SARAH,2 b. May 5, 1662[Nb]; m. May 15, 1683[Nb], William Titcomb, of Nb.[note 4]
25 II ANN,2 b. July 12, 1663[Nb].[note 4]
26 III SUSANNA2 [or JOANNA], b. Aug. 7, 1665[Nb]: liv. 1688.
27 iv WILLIAM,2 b. Nov. 23, 1668[Nb], posthumous; liv. 1688.
[note 1] Sv. states that he was son of Edward of the city of Salis., Wilts, Eng., who d. June 15; 1653; but this is the exact date of the death of Edward, infant son of Edward of Sails., New Eng. The statement, " Wm., son of Edward of Salis., came to Nb."[C Nb], if it refers to Salis., Mass., is entirely unreliable, as much so as that Ezra was son of Wm.
[note 2] Documents at Salem prove that when John Rolfe of Sails. and Nb. came to this country, he left a dau. in Eng., who was wife of Richard Ring of Marlborough, Wilts. Rolfe's will, 1663-4, 2d item, refers to his dau. Hester Sanders, wife of John Sanders and her chil. ; 3d, to Sarah Cotte11, wife of William Cottell and her two children, Sarah C. and Ann C. [the only ones then born], to be improved by Wm. Cottl for their benefit, " in addition to what I have given her before ;" 4th, to four Ring grandchil. then liv. in Eng. The will of Robert Ring, 1688, gave property to "Will. Cottle, son to Sarah, now wife of John Hale of Nb., and Joanna, dan. to said Sarah."
It has been assumed that Sarah Cottle was dau. of John Rolfe; but her age and other circumstances render it much more probable that she was his grand-dau. If she was the Sarah Hale, aged 33, who testified in the Caleb Powell case, in 1679-80[C Nb], she was b. ab. 1646 (or possibly a little earlier, as that would make her only 16 on the birth of her first child). The " Hale Genealogy," 1889, says she was prob. b. 1636. She was, therefore, 10 to 20 years younger than her husband. She was, also, probably the "Goody Hale" named in Wm. Morse's evidence in his wife's case, 1681[C Nb].
In view of all these facts, we venture to suggest that she may have been Sarah Ring, born in Eng., perhaps after the Rolfes came to this country, that Robert Ring (perhaps her uncle) brought the child over when he came to this country the second time, ab. 1652, where she was brought up in either the Rolfe-Sanders family or the Ring family. Her mother was evidently dead in 1663, and perhaps d. soon after her birth. C Nb. gives John Hale's third wife, Sarah Symonds; but the record is without date, and evidently not official. It has been suggested that she might have mar. and bur, a Symonds in the brief interval between 1668 and 1673; but it seems more probable that the Symonds story is an error, arising from the fact that a step-daughter of Deputy Gov. Samuel Symonds m. another John Hale.
[note 3] By John Hale she had 3 chil.: Joseph, b. Nov. 24, 1674, m. Mary Moody, 1699; Ben]., b. Aug. 11, 1676, d. Aug. 31, 1677; and Moses, b. July 10, 1678, m. twice.
[note 4] One Nb. record says Wm. Titcomb m. Sarah, another says Ann Cottle. Some or all the chil., b. 1684-1702, are given as chil. of Ann. Possibly he m. both sisters.
--From David Webster Hoyt, “The Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury, Massachusetts”, 1897, Providence, RI, pp 115-116.
However, note that the transcription of the inventory states that "he left four children, the youngest a son, and another child unborn."
This means that one child (a son, since William was the unborn one) is not accounted for. I checked the Vital Records of both Newbury and Newburyport and did not find any candidates.
