Alexander STANDISH
(Say 1626 - 6 Jul 1702)
Alexander Standish was born before the 1627 division of cattle and received a portion of his father's share. He was at least 16 years old to be named on the list of men able to bear arms in 1643. This leads to the conclusion that he was born about 1626. He was elected a freeman 7 June 1648.
The ancestry of his father, Capt Myles Standish, and his entitlement to Old World properties has long been a subject of dispute, fueled by mentions in the will of the elder Standish. In the will, Alexander was termed the "eldest son" and received a double share of the New World land and all land in the Old World. Alexander's will suggests that he attempted to recover property in England, apparently with no success.
Alexander was a respected member of the community, serving as constable of Duxbury in 1669. He was chosen as the town's assessor in 1687-88 and served as town clerk from 1694 to 1699.
Alexander wrote a will in Feb 1701/2 and, then, on the day before his death on 6 July 1702, wrote a codicil. The will was contested and the resulting division may have displeased all involved.
