There are no local records that show that James John Casteel of Bedford County, Tennessee born Virginia 1790 and died in Flat Creek, Bedford, Tennessee was married to an Elizabeth Hartley. Local sources indicate that his wife's name was McMellon or McMullen.
Abraham Casteel his son married, Mahaley, the daughter of Dr. William Reese Burdette, Jr. born in 1793 in Edgefield SC and died in Bedford County in 1838 and Sarah Lowe Burdette born in Bedford County, Tennessee in 1817. She died in 1860. In the 1860 Census of District 22 of Flat Creek, Bedford County, Tennessee, Abraham is 40 having been born in 1820. His children are: Benjamin 15, Lucretia 12, James Emanuel 6. Descendants of his children still live in the area. His brother, William married Dr. Burdette's daughter Elizabeth who died in labor in 1850. Abraham's mother Elizabeth died the same year. They are listed on the 1850 Bedford County Tn Mortality Schedule.
