Anna Marie Matilda "Tillie" Schmersahl

(15 May 1884 - 8 Sep 1987)

When Tillie's mother and father married, they moved from Illinois to Clinton, Missouri. Remember he was the stepson of Mr. Schweiring. His mother was destroyed by the death of her two-year-old twinboy and then her husband. She had only her mother and the other twin and remarried within a year. Well, he tried to farm, but his asthma was horrible and he really could not work. They were poor. Tillie had no art paper or pencils or brushes. She drew in the dirt daily. The boys worked the fields trying to survive. My grandfather said that Jesse James' brother Frank took a liking to Sophia and came EVERY Sunday to dinner. She killed a chicken and fried it every Sunday and my grandfather said that Frank ate first. The kids ate after he left. And under Frank's plate every time he left was always a gold coin. They saved those coins and traveled in a covered wagon down to Rosenberg to try to get rid of the asthma. The cattle died on the trip down and the asthma was worse in the humid Texas town. He didn't last long. But my grandfather said that is why Frank was called Frank, after Frank James. He told the story when Frank was visiting once and all that Uncle Frank did was just smile and shake his head in agreement. He is buried in an unmarked grave by the railroad track. We use to go and put flowers on it, but this past year my wife and I went but could not find it. The old graveyard was all grown up in a forest. Cannot believe Rosenberg, TX let that happen, but who is left to care about graves from the turn of the century? I have a cousin who lives in Clinton. We have visited there on the way to Minnesota to see one of my children, but didn't have the time to try to find the old homestead. So Tillie's father is buried in Rosenberg, TX and her mother in California.
