ELIZABETH [Ballard]

(1609 - 15 Mar 1687)

A child Elizabeth Lee, daughter of Henry Lee was baptized, St. Andrew Undershaft Parish, London, 28 Jan 1609. Although the date is about right, the name is far too common to accept this as the same Elizabeth without further proof.

Elizabeth had at least two other marriages - however the dates and sequence are confusing - or perhaps an error has crept into a transcription of one of the following records....

"Know all men by these presents the I, Elizabeth Bread of Lynn, in ye county of Essex and ye wife of William Knight as also his lawful executrix do hereby upon good considerations and divers good causes moving thereunto do hereby freely give and grant by this my deed of gift unto my well beloved son Nathaniel Ballard that parcell of land bought by my late husband William Ballard father of ye said Nathaniel Ballard, that is to say five acres of upland being more or less bounded E upon ye highway N with land of Allen Bread senr and with ye land of Samuel Hart and Benjamin Chadwell W with ye land of John Ballard 18, 8 mo. 1681
Acknowledged by Elizabeth Bread 3, 1 mo. 1673"

Note: she could not have acknowledged the transaction before she made it - and it appears she did not marry Allen Bread until May of 1684. However, I believe she is not the Elizabeth Ballard married to Allen Bread in 1684 - I believe that was her granddaughter and likely a different Allen Bread/Breed as well.

Charlestown Marriages:
Allen Bread & Elizabeth Ballard [she would have been Elizabeth Knight if this was Elizabeth, nee Lee], In presence of Jacob Knight & Timothy Bread, were married by James Russell, Esq, Magistrate on 22 May 1684

This situation is further enlightened by information on FindAGrave
Allen Breed is buried, Western Burial Ground, Lynn, Essec Co, MA
"Inscritions from the old burying ground, Lynn Mass." by Moulton, 1886, p. 19:
Here lyes buried ye body of Mr Allen Breed, aged 70 years. Dece'd Dec'br ye 27, 1730.
This man was born about 1660 - at least 50 years younger than the Elizabeth Lee who married to William Ballard and William Knight. He is shown married to a very different Ellizabeth Ballard - her burial recorded in the Lynn Vital Records, Vol 2, p.439 as July 1743 (indicates she was born about 1666) I believe this Elizabeth was more likely the daughter of William Ballard, a granddaughter of Elizabeth (Lee) Ballard Kight.

I believe there is also the possibility that there were TWO men named Allen Bread/Breed, both of whom married an Elizabeth.
A family history : recording the ancestors of Russell Snow Hitchcock; by Russell Snow Hitchcok, book in North America, Family Histories Collection, Ancestry.com
"Gage Ancestry"
p.141 "Thomas Gage #581 was bon in England and died at Harwich, Massacusetts between 30 June and 17 July 1695. He married Johanna #582, daughter of William Knight #583 of Salem, Massachusetts. Joanna was born in England. William Knight was born in England and died at Lynn on 5 March 1655/6. It is believed he came to America for the enjoyment of religious freedom and in so doing left a considerable estate in England, which his son John, who came with his father, later took possession of on his return to England. William Knight married Elizabeth for his second wife. There is a Salem record that his son-in-law Thomas Gage in 1655 acknowledged payment from Elizabeth Knight and her second husband Allen Breed, of a legacy from William Knight to his daughter Joanna, wife of said Thomas Gage, which indicates Elizabeth Knight married Allen Breed a few weeks after William Knight's death."

The above, combined with other records, would indicate that Elizabeth Lee's husbands in order were William Ballard, William Knight, and then Allen Breed - and she was married to all three prior to 1656. The later marriage is certainly a different Elizabeth and likely a different Allen Breed.
