Daniel Morse

(Abt 1610 - 5 Jun 1688)

Daniel was the son of Samuel Morse and Elizabeth Jasper. Samuel Morse left a will dated 2 Dec 1654, probate 30 Jan 1654/5 which divided his estate among his children ...John, Daniel, Mary Bullin and Ann Morse, wife of deceased son Joseph.

Daniel was married to Lydia Fisher by 1639.

Resided at Watertown, Dedham, Medfield, and Sherborn, MA. Freeman at Watertown 6 May 1635. Daniel, his father and his brother Joseph signed the Covenant to establish the new town of Dedham in 1636. In 1655, he was chosen a selectman in Medfield.
Along with his sons, Daniel Morse was by far the greatest landholder in Sherborn.

His will in Sherborn was dated 9 May 1687/8 and proved 13 Jun 1688. He left his wife the full use of his estate during the term of her natural life according to an agreement with son Samuel Morse.. Named eldest son Obadiah, other sons, Daniel, Jonathan & Nathaniel - and confirmed houses and land already deeded to them. Daughter Lidia, wife of Ephriam Wight received half part of a lot purchased of his brother Danl Fisher in Dedham and a sum of money. To daughter Bethiah, wife of John Perry, a house lot he had deeded to the and a sum of money. To Mary, wife of Edward West, the other half of the lot purchased from Danl Fisher, and a sum of money. To daughter Beshua, wife of Benjamin Fish, a sum of money. To son Samuel, he confirmed what he had given him and his wife's supply and maintenance. Sons Obadiah, Daniel, Jonathan & Samuel were each to contribute to his wife's support. Sons Obadiah & Daniel named executors.
Inventory was taken 12 Jun 1688.

It is said that Daniel first settled the land which became the Morse homestead for successive generations. From the history of cemeteries on the Sherborn town website, the "Farm Cemetery" was first established as a Morse Burying ground in 1688, the year of Daniel's death. So it is possible that Daniel was the first to be buried there. And possibly his wife was buried there as well three years later. An "abstract of Revolutionary War Graves" says he was buried at Sherborn #2, and Farm Cemetery was the second cemetery in Sherborn.
