Individual Details
James A. Felts
(Abt 1808 - Sep 1840)
James Felts appeared on the Logan Co tax rolls for the first time in 1829 with himself, one white male over 21, and a horse. Likely that's the year he turned 21. It was 1834 before he was listed as owning land - that would have been the year after he married. He declared 100 acres on the Gasper that year, but in subsequent years, he only claimed horses and cows, no land. Possibly he lived on part of his parents' tract.
Logan Co Marriage: James A. Felts to Hanna Hampton, Mar. 1833.
1840 Census. Logan Co KY. James A. and Archibald and Nathanial W. Felts. All were between 30-40 years of age. p.223
James Felts: 2m under 5, 1m 5-10, 1m 30-40. 2f -5, 1f 5-10, 1f 20-30, 1f 70-80
There is an almost identical entry on the same page as James Haden, p.201
James A. Felts 1m under 5, 1m 5-10, 1m 30-40. 2f -5, 1f 5-10, 1f 20-30
Only the addition of a middle initial and the absence of the older female. Neither James was a slave owner An older female, also age 70-80 was listed in the household of Archibald in 1840. It would seem to me there is a distinct possibility the same James Felts was counted twice, as the James H. Felts who was a minister, had no daughters and more sons based on the 1850 census.
James A. Felts wrote his will, 12 Sept 1840. Named Hannah his wife to receive livestock, household furniture, crops. Remainder of property to be sold to use for schooling and support of wife and children. Signed: James A. Felts.
Wit: John H. Farmer, S. B. C. Hall.
Probate 28 Sep 1840. Administrator: Nathaniel W. Felts
WB G, p.129
And on p.162-163 is the Inventory of James A. Felts, dated 9 Oct 1840. Appraisers: Nathaniel F. Brown, Joshua Ham, B. C. Hall.
The abstract lists Nathaniel W. Felts as "Executor" - he could not have been both executor and administrator.
1 Apr 1843. James Felts. Report of Exec. Commissioners: Richard W. Courts, W. P. Sevier. WB G, p.372
Hannah Hampton Felts, found as a widow in the 1850 Census [indexed as Hannah Fittz]; 4 children and her mother or grandmother Hannah Hampton, age 82 living with her.
Children listed in 1850 were: Charles W. 15, Nathaniel C. 14, Mary F. 12, and Mary J. P. age 10.
Hannah was 38 years old, or born about 1812.
Who is this Felts?
There is another marriage in Logan Co for a James H. Felts to Patsy Simmonds, 2 Sep 1830. Also in 1830 and 1831, there was both a James and a James H. Felts on the Logan Co tax list - neither owned any land that early. But in 1839, after the older John Felts in Logan Co, had possibly died, James H. Felts had 100 acres on the Muddy River, a location where John's land had been located. I think it likely James H. is a son of that early John Felts and is the following pastor:
A History of Kentucky Baptists, From 1769 to 1885, by J. H. Spencer, 1886,
Reprinted by Church History and Archives, 1976, Lafayette, TN. Gasper
River Association. Logan County.
J. H. FELTS was one of the best pastors in Gasper River Association. He
was born in Logan Co., Dec. 1, 1806. At about the age of 24, he united
with the Center church, and was set apart to the ministry, some two or
three years later. In 1837, he accepted a call to the care of Antioch
church, in Todd county, where he continued to serve till 1853. During
this period, the church increased from 40 to 76 members. With the
exception of the year 1857, he was pastor of Rock Spring church, from
1845, till 1871. This body was also prosperous, and grew up, under his
ministry, from 42 to 108 members. He was pastor of Center church, in
1842, and in 1862, but how much of the intervening period he served that
congregation, does not appear. He also served Sandy Creek, Stony Point,
and, perhaps, other churches, for longer or shorter periods. He was not
what is denominated a brilliant preacher; but he possessed a clear
knowledge of Bible doctrine, was steadfast in the faith, and was a good,
practical religious teacher. In addition to these qualities, and more
valuable than they all, he lived a godly life, and bequeathed to his
survivors a spotless christian character. He died of pneumonia, April 1,
1880.
