Father said to be John Nelson Smith, born 10 May 1840, Chattooga Co, GA, died 1 Feb 1908, Arkansas. Wife was Sarah Elizabeth Green (b. 1845 - d. 12 Sep 1907) - they married about 1878.

John N. Smith was the son of John and Rebecca J (Eddington) SMITH, who came to Scott Co. AR about 1871, and they purchased 160acs and improved it. They sold it and moved to Yell, around Briggsville and were engaged milling--sawmill, cotton gin and gristmill.
John N. married 1): Elizabeth Green, bn S.C., 9 Dec. 1861, in Catoosa GA; after her death, he mar. 2); Emma David or Davis in 1878. The 1880 Scott Co. census lists a 5 yr-old step-son, named James M. DAVIS.
Other of his children on that census were, John B(oyce), age 17, bn GA; Justin E(zekiel) age 11, bn KY; Elza C(rechaw) age 8, bn AR.
He was a Georgia Civil War soldier, and the GA military records list numerous John Smiths; but his unit most likely was 39th GA Inf. Regiment, as it was from his county. He enlisted in 1862. His unit was in the seige of Vicksburg, Battles of Franklin, Missionary Ridge and Chickamauga. He was taken prisoner at Vicksburg, but lived to be surrendered 9 Apr. 1865, at Appatamox, VA.
