Francis M. Hoskins

(25 Aug 1832 - 17 Nov 1863)

There is a Land Patent to Francis M. Hoskins, assignee of John White, Fond du Lac Co, 21 Dec 1850, 40 acres, the SE 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of S27, T16N, R18E. John White received the land grant for his service in the Mexican War.
Francis would have been only about 18, but I guess old enough to receive this patent, or he claimed to be old enough.

Lands records sent from the Fond du Lac, Wiconsin Genealogical Society researcher in Fond du Lac county (the deeds from this county have not been microfilmed and available only locally - unfortunately he did not present good citations for the locations of the following)

Myron Allen sold to Francis M. Hoskins for $200, land in the Town of Empire. 10 acres. The east side of the NW 1/4 of the NE 1/4, Section 11, Twp 15 N, Range 18 E, excepting the right of way for the Fond du Lac and Sheboygan plank road. 20 rods in width; 80 rods in length (no date included)

Francis M. Hoskins sold to Amanda Hoskins, 4 March 1857, for $250, in the Town of Taycheedah, the SE 1/4 of the SE 1/4, Section 27, Twp 16 N, Range 18 E, 40 acres. This was his patent above.

ON 10 Sep 1859, Francis sold to Harriett Van Kuren the 10 acres he had bought from his uncle Myron Allen for $80.00. The 1860 census does have a Harriet Van Kuren living in Empire - she was with her husband Henry - he was 39, she was 33, five children. They were both born in New York.

Francis/Frank or Marion Hoskins (a long shot since his middle name is never given in any of the documents) of appropriate age. I did find a possible entry in the 1860 census. Otter Creek Twp, Vigo Co, IN. Living in the household of Harrison and Louisa Denny, #795. Frank Hoskins, 28, Laborer, b. IN

He was of course of an age to serve in the Civil War and certainly his older brother did so - the brother served from Wisconsin which seems most likely but there was no Francis M. Hoskins that served in the War from Wisconsin.

A Francis M. Hoskins served as a private in Co. C, later Co. K, 21st Regt, Illinois Infantry. Listed online on the Soldiers and Sailors Database, National Park Service. Fold3 has a single card listing the same information. An Ancestry database had an enlistment date of 28 Jun 1861, mustered out 16 Nov 1863. (THIS is Francis - see later.)
