John Furnish

(1718 - Ca 1777)

Notes from Debbie Kleinschmidt: Acording to sworn testimony accepted 28th October 1779, by an Orange County, Virginia Court, John Furnish had served in Captain Peter Hogg's company of Rangers in 1754 in the French & Indian Wars. Captain Hogg's Company belonged to the Regiment comanded by George Washington. John Furnish, Jr., on the same day he received his father's bounty land for his Father's service in the Colonial Militia, sold it to Eliada Craig. Carolyn Jennett cites the source of this information as the Orange County, Virginia Minute Book #2, page 118.

"Virginia Colonial Soldiers", Lloyd DeWitt Bockstruck, 1988 p 261, Orange County - John Furnish, heir of John Furnish, deceased, provede the latter was a soldier in Capt. Hoggs Copany of Rangers in 1758, proven 28 October 1779. Page 273 Orange County - Warrant for 50 acres issuede to Elijah Craig, assignee of John Furnace, son and heir of John Furnace, deceased a soldier in Capt. Hogg's Company of Rangers in 1758,proven 28 Oct. 1779, page 325. At a court martial for Augusta County held 11 September 1756, John Furnish of Capt. Francisco's company fined 5 shillings for refusing to serve as corporal at 1 muster and 10 shillings for not appearing at 1 private and 1 general muster.

John Furnish, Sr. was listed on the Augusta County, Virginia Tax Rolls in 1761, but sometime between then and 1763 when his son James was born he moved to Orange County. Therefore that is where he probably died sometime before 9 February 1777. On February 9, 1777 an inventory and appraisal of the personal estate John Furnish was ordered by the court in Orange County, Virginia. The inventory was recordeed May 22, 1777, valuation of 80 pounds, 15 shillings and 6 pence. Carolyn Jennett cites source as Orange County, Virginia Minute Book #2, page 63. Also see Orange County, Virginia Will Book #2, 1774-1778, Reel 23, page 509. Another entry in Orange County, Virginia Will Book #2, page 55, 1776 states he died intestate before 9 February 1777, appraisers of John Furns, Samuel Furnis administrator of John Furnis, deceased. He with John Furnis, security, entered into and acknowledged bond for the same in the sum of 250 pounds.

The document that provides the most information about John Furnish Sr. and his family is a Court Record from Orange County, Virginia of 27 July 1786. According to this, James, orphan of John Furnish Jr. proved he was "heir at law" to his uncle William Furnish, deceased. The same record indicated that William was survived by his mother, Jane and several brothers and sisters, who are named. It appears that the John Furnish mentioned here as the deceased father of James is the John Furnish known to have died in Orange County in 1780, and was probably born about 1752. He would be the same John, "Son of John, who claimed John Furnish Sr.'s bounty land in 1779. Carolyn Jennett cites the source of this information as bein Dorman, John F "Orange County, Virginia Will Book #2, 1744 through 1778 (Washington D.C., 1961) page 110.
