Three Violent Deaths
Myron Mills Killed by the Cars at Zionsville
Miss Chellie Dye, of the Same Place, Killed by a Stone Hurled from a Blast
Abner Jackson, an old resident of Jackson Township, Killed by a Kick from a Horse.
... Myron R. Mills, 8 year old son of John M. and Ella Mills ...in front of the fast mail train, which struck and instantly killed him...
The other shock which the community received was the announcement of the accidental death of Miss Chellie Dye. Miss Dye had been to the funeral of Myron Mills, at the cemetery south of town and had just returned home. She hitched her horse to the rack in front of the door and had carried some articles, which she had purchased at the store as she returned through town, and laid them on the porch. Just at this instant her father, Mr. William Dye, who with some other persons, was blasting some large stone which lay in the field east and two hundred yards from the house, discharged a pound of blasting poswer for the purpose of breaking a very large stone to pieces. The stone was broken and two fragments, one weighing perhaps four or five and the other, seven or eight pounds, flew off high in the air in the direction of the house. The discharge of the power frightened Miss Dye's horse and she returned quickly to his head to pacify him when the smaller one of the two pieces of stone, lit fairly upon the top of her head crushing her skull and killing her instantly. The other piece of stone buried itself in the yard about twenty feet away but did no injury. The amount of powder used for the blast was not more than was needed for the work, and there is no blame attached to anyone for the unfortunate result.
