John Peatross

( - Bef Aug 1805)

John's wife was Sarah, a Quaker, and was embraced by the Society of Friends in December of 1777. The manumission of his slaves can be found in the court records of 1785. They had seven children: Mary, Amey, Anna, Rhoda, Elizabeth, Nelson, and John. Apparently Nelson and either Mary or Amey did not reach adulthood as only five children divided the estate of John.
John's estate was administered 12 Aug 1805.

John's brother Matthew also had a son named John - their records overlap slightly in Caroline Co. Some online information seems to superimpose the two men, but this John was dead by August 1805.

John's father had left a slave Rose Lilly to his son, John. John also purchased Jeffery & Jane from her estate on 14 Nov 1782. Rose Lilly was freed along with others on 14 Nov 1782.
Jeffrey & Jane Amos were freed when they reached 21 and 18, as of 10 Nov 1785.

March, 1806
Division of the Negroes held by John Peatross agreeable to the will of his father into five equal parts for Ann Peatross, John Peatross, Rhoda Peatross, Eliza Peatross, and William Winston, infant. John's wife Sarah must have already been deceased since she received no allotment.

John's brother Thomas was administrator of his estate. Descendants of Rose Lilly petitioned for the freed from Thomas. Defendants in the suit were Thomas Peatross as administrator of John, and the following children of John Peatross: John, Rhoda and Elizabeth, and William Winston, the only child of a deceased daughter of John Peatross. Note: I have also seen these children place as children of Thomas, that's an error - they were John's children.
Complainents, descendants of Rose Lilly were Sam, William, Cyrus, Cheadle, Ben, Mahala, Jugga, Cloe and Pendleton. They claimed to be held in bondage by Thomas Peatross. 14 Jul 1806.
