James married Martha Anderson, 22 Dec 1774, Rockbridge. She died in Tennessee, 11 Mar 1838.

He was an ensign in the Revolution.

There is a case in Chancery, Rockbridge Co.
James McCampbell & John Tedford v. William Stuart.
Stuart had apparently made out a bond dated 13 Apr 1779 to Joseph Culton for 1300£ good and lawful money. The bond was condidtioned on the assigning of Title for a tract of land where Culton was living, adj. John Wilson's and that of McCampbell and bounded by the Back Creek of the North Fork of the James River and containing 100 acres. Stuart has removed himself privately from this county to place unknown and Culton has sold the tract to McCampbell & Tedford on 5 Jan 1781. They are seeking title in fee simple.
The Summons in the file is dated 10 Oct 1783.
