There were two James Vances listed in the Jefferson Co Census in 1850 but neither of them could have been this James. One was age 48 - his wife was Rebecca. A James Vance had married a Rebecca Robinson on 1 Nov 1821 in Grainger Co and the ages of the children show this is likely that James - his relationship to this Vance family is not known. Another James Vance was age 38 with wife Margaret, a much younger man - possibly a son or a nephew, son of David Vance. This James, age 38, had living in his household a James Vance, age 77, born in Pennsylvania - quite likely this man.
