DAVID Vance

(29 Mar 1771 - Bef 1840)

David Vance is named in his father's will. He is said to have inherited the family land on the Holston River when his father died.

There are no existing census records for the area of Jefferson Co TN for the years 1800, 1810, and 1820.

The date of marriage to "R. Taylor", 16 Oct 1803, may have been the date the license was issued.
David married Margaret Taylor, 10 Dec 1822.
Both marriages took place in Jefferson County, TN
Both of his marriages are found in Tennessee Marriages to 1825, Jordan R. Dodd editor, Liahona Research, and were taken from LDS microfilm #0968301

1830 Census. Jefferson Co TN, p.324
David Vance: 3 males age 5-10, 2 males 10-15, 3 males 15-20, one male age 60-69 [David]. Three females under age 5 [Sarah, Jane & Edith], one female age 40 [Margaret].
p.316 is Andrew, son of David. 1 male child under 5 [probably Archelus] and 2 males age 20-30. One female age 15-20

Proof of the children of David is scant. Family tradition is that Andrew raised his younger sisters, Sarah, Jane & Edith, after the death of their parents. In 1850, Andrew Vance, born in Tennesse, did indeed have Sarah & Edith in his household in Calloway Co. Jane Vance was married and was with her new husband William A. Brooks in Calloway in the same year. In the 1880 census, Jane Vance Brooks stated that her father was born in Pennsylvania.

A family journal "Memory of Dr. William Atherton Brooks, his life, as written by him in his seventy-first year", 1897, states:
"William A. Brooks, 4th son of James R. and Elizabeth Brooks was born in Kentucky, December 26, 1826, married Jane Vance, March 28, 1850. She was the daughter of David & Margaret Vance and was born in Tennessee January 26, 1830.

The death record of Sarah Vance in Calloway County, 18 Apr 1853, also states that her parents were D. & M. Vance.

Other than the three daughters, born of David's second wife Margaret, and Andrew son of David & Rhue Taylor, other children shown by researchers include Hugh, Elizabeth, James, John , and Robert. There was consistently a Samuel Vance and his sons found living near David's son James in Jefferson Co TN. Many of these names were also the names of David's siblings. I have included here only those that I thought were possibilities because of additional records found. A Robert Vance who married Tempe Brewer is given as a possible son without proof - I found no Robert Vance in 1850 who could have been this man.

I found nothing else about Edith, the youngest daughter, born 1831, except that she was apparently living with her older half brother Andrew in 1840 and 1850. Sarah, born about 1827, died as noted above about age 26.

More about Jane Vance was easily found:
