Obituary of John Johnson:
John W. Johnson, long-time resident of Irving, Texas, passed away on June 12, 2012 following a short illness. Johnny was born in Minnesota in 1921 and, like many young persons of his generation, chose to serve his country in the military by enlisting as a Navy pilot during World War II. During pilot training in Corpus Christi, Texas, he met and married Barbara, his wife of 68 years. Following the surrender of Japan to America, Johnny was among the first to pilot an American military aircraft to land on the Japanese mainland where he assisted in the evacuation of Japanese held American prisoners of war. Following his discharge from the Navy, he earned a journalism degree from the University of Minnesota. He worked for the Corpus Christi Caller-Times as a sports reporter and wrote free-lance articles for various aviation publications. He was recruited into the advertising and public relations department of the aerospace defense contractor, Chance Vought, in the early 1950's. He advanced in his profession to attain the position of Vice President of Public Relations and Advertising for Ling Temco Vought Corporation, from which he retired in 1986. Prior to his retirement, he attended Perkins School of Theology at SMU and was ordained to the priesthood of the Anglican Church. His assignments included serving as assistant pastor at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Irving. Johnny is preceded in death by his dear son, Timothy James. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; his children, Steven Francis, Rebecca Ann, Mary Elizabeth, and Peter Michael; eight grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
