Germain LeSage, "Histoire de Louiseville":
--p. 18: Jean Jacquet de Gerlaise dit Saint-Amant. One of the pioneers of Riviere du Loup from the LaFouille Company. The only pioneer whose descendants have lived in Riviere du Loup (Louiseville) continuously from that day. Son and heir of Ferdinand de Gerlaise, Seigneur des Hametaux, and of Damoiselle Dorothée Cona, of the parish of Saint-Paul de Liege, in Belgium. "Le Sieur De Saint-Amant" was a distinguished bourgeois and somewhat educated. Age about 22 years. A bachelor, like his companions. --pp. 20-21: Soldiers anxious to settle down. "Thus, in 1667, Jean Jacquet de Gerlaise, seeing his future assured, decided to marry. He cast his intentions on Jeanne Trudelle, daughter of Jean Trudelle of the Cote de Beaupre." She was only eleven years old. Probably knew her because of her mother, also of Liege. Contract signed 12 Sep 1667. He gave his in-laws a solid gold walking-stick (?) (For details of the dowry given by her parents, see notes for Jeanne Trudelle.) Exact date of marriage unknown, because a feuillet (leaf, folio) is missing from this year in the register of Chateau-Richer.
--pp. 21-22: In spring of 1669, Jean Jacquet de Gerlaise had set up a home. The father-in-law came to work for six months on the concession which was at last completely prepared for the arrival of the girl, who carried from Chateau-Richer a cargo of gifts: two cows, a bull of three years, three pigs (one large and one small), 24 minots (1 minot=39 litres) of grain, a straw mattress, two coverlets (one new and the other old), a pair of sheets of ten ells, two pewter platters, two plates and a half-dozen spoons, two "sacs montes", a frying pan, a grill (or gridiron), an axe and a hoe, a "croc a fumier," a chest, some table linens for both special occasions and everyday, a churn, a half-dozen tubs, two cooking pots, a habit (woman's outfit or gown), two fine shirts, a camisole of "crezeau," a pair of mittens, a pair of stockings, a pair of French shoes, a "guenecon" of fine linen, two "guenecons" of coarse linen, two large (or coarse) shirts, two pairs of stockings of fine linen and ribbon . . .
The transport of all this household equipment to Riviere du Loup was the work of Bertrand Chesnay dit la Garenne, who received in payment a two-year-old bull.
The very young madame De Gerlaise was probably the first woman to arrive in the new settlement. (soon to be followed by wife of Jean Berard)
--p. 24: Ref. to Jean de Gerlaise as already married but still without children.
--p. 25: The year 1673 brought to the family of Jean de Gerlaise and Jeanne Trudelle a little girl named Catherine. The mother returned to the parish of L'Ange-Gardien for the happy birth, which took place on the 14th of April.
--p. 26: Summer of 1673, Jean took service as tenant farmer for St-Joseph hospital in Montreal. Rented out his land to Jacques Paviot. Not known how well he did in this capacity, but he stayed in Montreal less than a year. During his absence, his farm at Riviere-du-Loup seemed to have been cultivated by Jean Berard dit Laverdia.
--p. 34: 1678: girl born to Jean de Gervaise family, but she did not live long.
--p. 36: Listing in 1681 Census: Jean Jacquet de Gerlaise dit Saint-Amant, age thirty-eight years. His wife, Jeanne Trudelle, age about twenty-five years. His daughter, Catherine, age eight years. He possesses a gun, two horned beasts, and seven arpents "en valeur."
--p. 49: Increasing danger because of Iroquois attacks. Family of Jean de Gerlaise was one of only four families not to flee the area.
