Individual Details
Joseph L. MANSEAU
(Apr 1847 - 4 Oct 1924)
Ran a feed store (J L Manseau & Son) in Manistee, with his son, William. Joseph also served as coroner in Manistee.
I originally thought there was only one Joseph Manseau born in this family, but I now believe there were two. The first one must have died in infancy. The birth record for the first one clearly states that he was born on 12 July 1845 in Brown County. The Joseph who went on to marry Hattie Hawkins seems to have been born in April of 1847, according to numerous records. His naval enlistment in 1864 states that he was 17 years old, and had been born in Milwaukee. I do recall reading that this family lived in Milwaukee briefly before moving to Michigan. There is always the possibility that the records with the 1847 date were simply wrong, but there are enough of them, and they are consistent enough, that the probability seems to point to two Josephs.
