Rank of Colonel He was a Justice Various in Virginia. William is mentioned in the Loudoun Co. Minute Book, 1780-83, as having provided 219 pounds of beef and 84 pounds of bacon @@/9 & 4/10 for pasturage as per account to the US troups (13 March 1782). On 13 August 1782 there is this entry: "Upon the motion of Wm. ELLZEY, ordered that the clerk enter 20 slaves, viz. George, Daniel, Phill, Nace, Charles, Solomon, Madge, Cate, Hannah, Genny, Winny, Scillah, Alley, Esther, Patience, Moses, Benor, Lucy, Abram, Peter, also 13 horses and 23 head of cattle." this entry may also be in regard to supplies given or lent to the American troops.
