On 28 December 1956, in Smithville, Monroe County, Mississippi, he married Sylvia Carolyn Saxon, daughter of Carroll Henry and Oma Earlene (Stroup) Saxon. She was born 7 November 1935 in Houlka, Chickasaw County, Mississippi.

He was born June 6, 1930 in Thorn to Eugene and Sally Virginia Kirkpatrick. He was the retired co-owner and operator of West End Service Station and Garage in Houston. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of the VFW and the American Legion. He attended New Hope Church of God. Services will be at 11 a.m. today at the Houston Funeral Home with the Rev. Gregg Moss and the Rev. Johnny Cherry officiating. Burial will be in the Chickasaw Memorial Gardens. Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Saxon Kirkpatrick of Houston; two sons, John D. Kirkpatrick Jr. and his wife, Mary Jane, of Houston, Carroll Saxon Kirkpatrick and his wife, Lori, of Cordova, Tenn.; two sisters, Sara K. Isaacs of Graniteville, S.C., and Mary Nell Sanford of Bay St. Louis; four grandchildren, John Doyle "Trey" Kirkpatrick III, Martha Kirkpatrick, Haley Kirkpatrick, all of Houston, and Katie Kirkpatrick of Cordova, Tenn. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth K. Moore and Elizabeth Jo Powell. Pallbearers will be Dewitt Moore, Bob Sanford, Mike Pearson, Mike Langley, Rick Huffman, Eddie Powell, Jeff Moore and Christain Fullilove. Honorary pallbearers will be Kenneth Moore, Bill Moore, Steve Pearson, Conway Huffman, Robert Taylor, Doyle Wooldridge, Lyn Johnson and Dale Mooneyham. Memorials may be made to New Hope Church of God c/o Mr. Conway Huffman, 872 Hwy. 32 Ext., Houston, MS 38851 or to Wesley Chapel Cemetery Trust Fund, 237 North Pontotoc Street, Houston, MS 38851.
