Amarillo Globe-News, Amarillo, Texas, Nov. 10, 2012: PAMPA--- Billie Pete Hughes, 84, of Pampa died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012, in Amarillo. Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. today in Brooks Chapel in Canyon with Paul Nachtigall, pastor of Highland Baptist Church of Pampa, officiating. Burial will be private. Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Directors of Canyon. Billie Pete Hughes was born Feb. 21, 1928, in Borger to Bill and Frankie Graves Hughes. He graduated from McLean High School, where he played football, then attended Texas Tech University and West Texas State University. He married Velma Jean McLaughlin in 1957. She preceded him in death in 1995. He was a veteran of the Army and Merchant Marines, serving in World War II and the Korean War. He was an X-ray laboratory technician at Medical Surgical Clinic in Pampa. He was a Mason, a Shriner and a Baptist. He enjoyed fishing, operating his ham radio and loved traveling in Mexico. He also was preceded in death by a sister, a grandson and a great-granddaughter. Survivors include two daughters, Karen Hughes of Amarillo and Pam Best of Pampa; a son, Russell Hughes and wife Trisha of Pampa; three sisters, Barbara Wood and husband Kenneth of Merkel, Lota Hughes of Tallahassee, Fla., and Ann Doan and husband Ronny of Merkel; two brothers, Gary Smith of Jasper and Barry Ford Smith and wife Myrna of Amarillo; seven grand-children; and eight great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to Shriners Childrens Hospital, P.O. Box 328, Amarillo, TX 79105.
