The Roanoke Times, October 10, 2000: Booth, Colonel Cornell Dent, and his wife, Booth, Joanne Darby, of Tallahassee, Fla., married October 10, 1936, died together on Saturday, October 7, 2000, three days before their 64th wedding anniversary. Cornell Dent Booth was born on January 9, 1914, in West Point, New York, son of the late Colonel and Mrs. Lucian Dent Booth. He was a graduate of Saint Albans school in Washington, D.C., and attended the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York, with the Class of 1936. He received a Bachelors degree from the University of Maryland and a Master of Arts in Teaching from American University. He was an Ordnance officer and paratrooper in the United States Army for 29 years including active duty in World War II and participation in the invasion of Okinawa. He commanded an Airborne Ordnance Battalion with the 11th Airborne Division in Germany. He was a recipient of many awards and medals during his military career, most notably the Army Commendation Medal and the Legion of Merit. He retired in 1969 to Tallahassee, Florida, where he worked for the Department of Commerce, State of Florida. He was an active member of Common Cause and a charter member of the Tallahassee Retired Officers' Association. He was instrumental in starting the Army ROTC program at the Florida State University in 1951, and was its first Professor of Military Science. Joanne Darby Booth was born on August 16, 1915, in Plattsburgh Barracks, New York, daughter of the late Colonel and Mrs. Taylor Edwin Darby. She was a graduate of Catherine Gibbs School, New York. She received her Bachelors and Masters degrees from Florida State University in Library Science. She worked as a research librarian at Strozier Library on the FSU campus, and in that capacity, spent six months as the Librarian for the London Exchange Program. She was active in numerous political, neighborhood planning and environmental causes. She actively supported the arts and one of her many hobbies was genealogy. She was a member of the Ladies Golf Association, winning the ladies golf tournament with a hole-in-one after the age of 80. Both are survived by their daughters, Louisa Booth Noble of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Helen Cornell Booth of Gainesville, Fla.; granddaughters, Catherine Cornell Noble of Chicago, Ill., and Jennifer Darby Noble of Salinas, Calif. Col. Booth is predeceased by a brother, Robert Middleton Booth, and is survived by three sisters, Catherine Booth Britton of Southbury, Conn., Frances Booth Kincanon of Roanoke, Va., and Leila Booth Morris of Columbus, Ga. Joanne is predeceased by her sister, Dorothy Darby Johnson. The memorial service will be held Wednesday, October 11, at 1 p.m. at Bevis Funeral Home, in Tallahassee, Fla. In lieu of flowers, one may contribute to the Salvation Army. Burial will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
