James William Huie

Huie, one of the pioneer citizens of the western part of the county, died at his home three miles west of Sesser at 3 o'clock Tuesday morning, following an extended illness.

Mr. Huie had reached the ripe age of 82 years and had been active in the affairs of the county for many years, having served on the county board and in other minor offices He had much to do with building the city of Sesser, and was active in business and civic affairs there until a few years ago, when ill health and the infirmities of age forced his retirement. For many years he was the Ford dealer in Sesser and Christopher, and at one time was among the largest real estate owners of the community.

He is survived by his widow, Linda; four sons, John of LaVerne, Calif.; J. E. of Sesser, Meredith of Christopher, and Theodore of Sesser; three daughters, Mrs. Stanton Hutson and Mrs. Hattie Barfield of Sesser, and Mrs. Daisy Ramsey of Detroit.

Funeral services were held at the Horse Prairie Baptist church at 11 o'clock this (Thursday) morning. Rev. John Maulding of McLeansboro officiating, followed by interment in the Horse Prairie cemetery, with the Brayfield funeral home of Sesser in charge.

JAMES WILLIAM HUIE was born May 1, 1862, in Jefferson County, IL, and died June 29, 1944. He married Martha Catherine Moore November 25, 1880, born September 15, 1860, and died November 9, 1924, in Vero, FL. Both are buried in Horse Prairie Cemetery near Sesser, IL. James William's father, James Merideth, was killed felling a tree on his farm in Jefferson County, IL, at age 24. Martha E. Huie, his mother, later married Nathan Roberson, February 5, 1865, and moved out of state. James William went to the home of his Aunt and Uncle, Nancy and John Kirkpatrick, to live. He related the story of going on foot, carrying his belongings tied in a red bandanna handkerchief, on a pole over his shoulder. The Huie families were early settlers in Franklin and Jefferson Counties. They were Farmers, Tin Shop Operators, Lumber Dealers, Ford-Ferguson Tractor Dealers, Automobile Dealers and Repairmen as well as Oil Wholesalers. J. W. Huie established the J. W. Huie Lumber Company and J. W. Huie Motor company selling Hupmobile, Maxwell, Studebaker and Ford autos; and as sons began working in the business world, they joined the ventures as well as establishing some on their own. James William and Martha Catherine Huie were parents of 10 children.

DEWEY HUIE, son of J. W. and Martha C., was born September 22, 1898, and died October 12,1941. He married Edna Hanlin April 14, 1920, who died March 17, 1983. They were parents of Dewey Jr., born July 26, 1923, and died March 29, 1929. All are buried in Maple Hill Cemetery, Sesser, IL.

MATTIE HUIE was born April 3, 1901, and married Clifton P. Barfield, born November 27, 1900.

DAISY DAY HUIE was born September 5, 1903, in Barren Township, Franklin County, IL, and lives in Glendora, CA. She married Isaac. Booth Ramsey, February 13, 1920, born August 4, 1896, in Whickham England, died January 20, 1982, and is buried in Pamona, CA.

After the family was reared and the death of Martha C. Huie, James W. married Frances Campbell Britton, born May 7, 1859, and died November 20, 1939, she is buried in Phillips Cemetery, southeast of Ewing, IL. In 1940, he married Malinda Cook Wright, born June 19, 1885; she died February 9, 1964, and is buried in Maple Hill Cemetery, Sesser, IL.
