Nevada State Journal, Reno, Nevada, Monday, December 28, 1964, Page 3: Las Vegas---Warren (Doc) Bayley, one of the biggest casino operators on the Las Vegas Strip and a "pioneer of "package flights" that brought thousands of gamblers here, died Saturday night of a heart attack. The 64 year-old Bayley was the major stockholder in two Las Vegas Strip hotels, the Hacienda and the Frontier. He was stricken with a heart attack and rushed to Sunrise Hospital where he died. Born and reared on a farm near Platteville, Wis.,, he began his rise in the hotel business in Fresno, Calif, where he expanded the small Hacienda Motel into a 365 room establishment. He later opened a similar motel in Bakersfield, and at the time of his death also owned one in Indio, Calif. The tall, white-haired Bayley began building his Las Vegas Hacienda hotel in 1953 and opened it June of 1956. He was granted a gaming license four months later, and soon became one of the most colorful figures in Nevada gambling. From 1958 through 1963 he operated an airline with six planes that brought gamblers to Las Vegas from the West Coast, New York, St. Louis and Dallas as part of a package plan. Four years ago Bayley purchased 1,300 acres at nearby Mount Charleston and began to develop it as housing sites. He was a strong supporter of Sen. Barry Goldwater in the 1964 elections and (un printed area) offered the GOP presidential candidate the use of his planes. Bayley is survived by his widow, Judy, who announced that pursuant to her husband's wishes, the operations of the Hacienda and other enterprises would continue in the same manner as before. He also had a son, Patrick, who resides here.
